A Walk Around Carisbrooke Castle

The ground that surrounds Carisbrooke Castle is a popular walk with dog owners and locals – and connects to lots of onward walks around rural Carisbrooke, with its stunning views and watering holes.

It takes around 20 minutes to do a loop around the castle, alongside the old moat. A castle moat is a deep ditch encircling a fortress, often filled with water in its day. The moat was likely built in the 12th century, alongside Carisbrooke Castle – to impede attackers. Although the first defensive castle wall was believed to be built in the 9th century.

In the spring, the walk is simply stunning, with breath-taking views over Carisbrooke. Of course, if you buy a ticket to enter the castle, the views get even better! Depending on how energetic you’re feeling, you can loop around the castle two or three times – enjoying different sights every time.

There’s plentiful parking in the car park outside the castle – and a number of pubs and cafes to stop in after your walk for refreshments.
