New Post Office Facilities To Open In Newport Town Centre

After going two and a half years without, Newport town centre will finally have its Post Office back next month.

Central Convenience Store has taken the mantle of the town centre Post Office, once again giving the Island's county town these vital facilities after opening on Wednesday, 29 November 2023 at 1pm.

Since the Post Office inside the former Co-operative on South Street/Pyle Street closed in February 2021, Shaping Newport — a collaboration between Newport Business Association, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council and the Isle of Wight Council — has worked to bring services back.

The two-position Post Office Local Plus, at 129 High Street, will offer customers a range of Post Office services, from posting letters and parcels to collecting and returning online shopping items.

Customers can also take advantage of various banking services including cash withdrawals and balance enquiries for all the main UK banks.

The opening hours will be Monday to Sunday, 6am until 10.30pm.

Welcoming today's news, Councillor Julie Jones-Evans, Cabinet member for regeneration, said:

"This is great news for Newport and I'd like to thank Central Convenience Stores for stepping up to provide and invest in this facility.

"Using the Post Office is an important part of visiting the shops for a lot of people, so other businesses will benefit from the Post Office returning."

Graham Brander, Post Office network provision lead, added:

“We are delighted to soon be restoring a Post Office to this area as we know how important a Post Office is to a community.

"The branch’s long opening hours, seven days a week, will make it convenient for customers to visit. In addition, this new branch will have a wide door and a ramp at the entrance helping to make it even more accessible."
