The Little Sweep Remembered On Valentine’s Day

A poignant gathering was held in Newport's Church Litten on Valentine’s Day to remember ‘The Little Sweep’ Valentine Gray.

Valentine died aged nine at the hands of his master, Benjamin Davies in 1822.

Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council recently added wording to the Valentine Gray monument in Church Litten to show he is still remembered by the residents of Newport & Carisbrooke.

Cllr Julie Jones-Evans said:

"To see this new inscription 200 years on from Valentine's death is very moving, his life isn't forgotten.

"The monument was raised by penny subscriptions by the people of Newport — NCCC is funded by our local residents so it's apt that we could do this commemorative addition.

"2022 was our Year of The Child and it was a great success working alongside the Youth Trust and local historians.

"Thank you to everyone who contributed."
