Christmas Crafts for Kids

From tree decorations to handmade gifts, it’s amazing what you can make with a glue stick and a spot of eco glitter, Hanna Prince rounds up the best family Christmas craft projects.

Looking for creative ways to get the festive spirit flowing? Clear some table space, round up your little helpers and get stuck into one of these family-friendly Christmas crafting ideas.

Tree decorations

Handmade ornaments are surprisingly easy to make. Paint your own snow scene on an old bauble, try crafting candy canes using red and white beads threaded onto pipe cleaners, or make festive shapes out of salt dough and bake them in the oven. No need to invest in special materials - from toilets roll reindeer to cotton-threaded popcorn garlands, fancy decorations can often be based on items you already have around the house.

Christmas wreaths

Making a festive family door wreath can be as simply as sticking screwed-up green tissue paper onto a ring of card. If your kids are older and you want to try something more sophisticated, secure conifer and holly springs gathered from the garden to a wreath ring using florist wire (an adult will need to do the wire cutting). Wire-threaded cinnamon sticks, dried orange slices and gold-sprayed pinecones can all be added for extra decoration.

Snow globes

Wondering what to do with all those old jam jars hanging around the kitchen? Make a snow globe, of course! Get the kids to scour their bedrooms for toys tiny enough to fit in a jar (bottle brush trees, Lego and other plastic figurines are all ideal). Glue the toys to the inside lid of the jar with waterproof glue (mum and dad’s job), add water and eco glitter to the jar, then replace the lid firmly and shake to your heart’s content. Snow globes also make excellent presents for teachers, friends and doting grandparents.

Easy gift ideas

There’s nothing better than a handmade gift. Stop off at the beach first to gather materials – painted pebbles make excellent paperweights and shells can be pressed into salt dough to create pretty pendants. Alternatively, scour your cupboards for yet more jam jars and block paint them with acrylic craft paint and a foam brush. Hey presto – an instant vase! Older kids can also try their hand at candle carving. Get creative with a wax castle, animal or Christmas scene.

Print art

Using handprints and fingerprints to create keepsakes is a great way to get younger kids involved in a festive craft project. Make the perfect Christmas tree card by using painty handprints as branch shapes - or add a red nose and eyes to turn handprints into a cute reindeer. Fingerprints can be used to create the baubles on a Christmas tree, a string of fairy-lights or the snowflakes on a wintery scene. And even the tiniest members of the family can add their footprints to an adorable ‘mistletoes’ card.
