When people dream of a Mediterranean holiday, their minds usually jump straight to Greece’s whitewashed islands or Italy’s glamorous coastline. But the Mediterranean is far bigger—and far more diverse—than its most famous destinations.

Beyond the headline-grabbing hotspots are places with crystal-clear water, beautiful old towns, outstanding food, and a fraction of the crowds. If you're looking for a Mediterranean escape that feels a little more under the radar, these five destinations deserve your attention.

Kotor Old Town

1. Kotor, Montenegro

Tucked away at the end of a spectacular bay, Kotor combines dramatic mountain scenery with a beautifully preserved medieval old town.

The winding stone streets feel made for aimless wandering, while cafés and restaurants spill into sunny squares beneath ancient walls. Climb to the fortress above town and you'll be rewarded with one of the most breath-taking views anywhere on the Mediterranean coast.

It has all the beauty of more famous destinations, but far fewer people have it on their bucket list.

2. Piran, Slovenia

Slovenia's tiny stretch of Adriatic coastline often gets overlooked entirely, which is exactly what makes Piran such a delight.

This compact coastal town is a maze of Venetian-style architecture, waterfront cafés, and narrow lanes leading towards the sea. Days here are spent swimming from rocky platforms, lingering over seafood lunches, and watching the sunset from the harbour.

It's small, elegant, and wonderfully relaxed.

3. Collioure, France

Nestled near the Spanish border, Collioure feels worlds away from the glitz of the French Riviera. Brightly coloured buildings line the waterfront, fishing boats bob gently in the harbour, and artists still flock here for the quality of light that once inspired Matisse.

The beaches may be modest, but the atmosphere is exceptional. Long lunches, local wine, and evening strolls along the seafront are all part of daily life.

4. Bozcaada, Turkey

Floating in the northeastern Aegean Sea, Bozcaada is one of Turkey's best-kept secrets. Vineyards, whitewashed houses, and crystal-clear coves give the island a distinctly Mediterranean feel, but without the crowds found elsewhere in the region.

The charming main town is filled with bougainvillea-covered streets, family-run restaurants, and waterfront cafés where life seems to move at half speed. Days are best spent beach-hopping, sampling local wines, and watching fishing boats drift across the harbour.

It's relaxed, authentic, and exactly the kind of place you'll want to keep to yourself.

5. Cavtat, Croatia

Just south of Dubrovnik lies Cavtat, a coastal town that offers many of the same Adriatic charms without the overwhelming crowds.

Palm-lined promenades, crystal-clear water, and beautiful harbour views create an effortlessly relaxing atmosphere. It's the kind of place where mornings disappear over coffee, afternoons are spent swimming, and evenings stretch long into the warm Mediterranean night.
