The Falconry Experience - based at Robin Hill - has welcomed a new resident to the Isle of Wight — an 11-year-old captive-bred Bald Eagle named Kailani.
Her name means “sea and sky”, a fitting tribute to her new permanent island home and the secure future now ahead of her.
Kailani was bred in Wales before moving to a falconry centre in Oxford, where she took part in flying demonstrations for around five years.
During this time, she began showing signs of aggression towards handlers, leading to her removal from public displays and placement in an aviary for several years.
She was later transferred to another falconry centre, but ongoing feather damage and behavioural challenges meant she was again withdrawn from flying work.
It became clear she needed a permanent, carefully managed environment — which she has now found at The Falconry Experience.
Although her feather condition is still recovering and a full moult is required, staff say her wellbeing is the priority.
She is being given a calm, structured setting focused on building confidence, trust and security at her own pace.
Since arriving on the Island, Kailani’s training has been reset to basics, with progress guided entirely by her behaviour.
She will be worked exclusively by one handler, Charlotte, under a one-to-one approach designed to reduce stress and support long-term welfare.
Visitors will be able to meet Kailani during the upcoming half-term, when she goes on display at The Falconry Experience at Robin Hill.
Guests can learn her story and follow her progress as she settles into her new home.
Looking ahead, the team hopes she will eventually return to flight, with plans for displays over the Robin Hill landscape and selected coastal locations.
The Falconry Experience says Kailani now has a stable, permanent home dedicated to her lifelong care — adding she is “not just a new arrival, but part of the family”.
