A new regional campaign is encouraging people across the South East, including the Isle of Wight, to rethink the idea that smoking relieves stress – and highlighting how quitting can actually make people feel happier.

The South East Smokefree Alliance (SESA) is visiting towns and cities throughout January to spark conversations about wellbeing, the link between quitting smoking and improved mood, and what makes people happy.

Evidence shows stopping smoking not only improves physical health but also boosts mental wellbeing.

Within weeks of quitting, the brain starts to rebalance dopamine, the “happy hormone” that smoking suppresses.

On the Isle of Wight, the campaign will be visible on 23 January with pop-ups at:

  • St Thomas’ Square – 10am to 3pm

  • St Mary’s Hospital (outside the Full Circle Restaurant) – 12pm to 2pm

Residents can drop by for friendly, no-pressure advice, carbon monoxide readings, personalised quit support, and to meet the campaign’s roving “brain” character, designed to start conversations about how quitting smoking supports mood, reduces stress, and improves mental health.

Visitors will also be asked what makes them happy – from simple pleasures like outdoor walks or laughing with friends, to the deeper calm of self-care.

The campaign is part of a wider mass media effort, funded by 18 councils across the South East, which includes TV, radio, and online messaging.

Short films and animations explain how “smoking steals happiness,” offering practical advice on how to quit and access local support services.

Dr Sarah Milne, Lead of the South East Smokefree Alliance, said:

“So many people believe smoking helps them cope with stress, but the truth is the opposite.
"Nicotine tricks your brain into thinking you need it to feel calm, when it’s actually taking away your happiness and resilience.
"Within weeks of quitting, your brain starts to heal naturally and your mood lifts.”

Kate Harvey, Director of Public Health at Isle of Wight Council, added:

“Quitting smoking isn’t just about living longer – it’s about feeling better every day.
"The benefits come quickly, including more energy, improved mood, and reduced stress.
"Our local Smokefree Island service is ready to support anyone ready to take that first step toward a happier, healthier future.”

Smokefree Island offers free one-to-one sessions, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), Swap to Stop vape kits, stop smoking medications, and support for those using other nicotine products. To join for free, text QUIT to 80011 or visit www.smokefreeisland.co.uk.
