Comfort food at its best! This all-time favourite classic is quick and easy to make and a dessert that will satisfy the whole family
INGREDIENTS
For the filling
575g/20oz Bramley apples, peeled, cored and sliced to 1cm thick
50g/2oz golden caster sugar
1 tbsp plain flour
1 pinch ground cinnamon
For the crumble
300g/10oz plain flour
175g/6oz golden caster sugar
Pinch of salt200g/7oz butter, cubed
1-2 tbsp rolled oats (optional)
Thick cream, custard, or ice cream to serve
METHOD
1. Heat the oven to 190°C/170°C Fan/Gas Mark 5. Toss the sliced Bramley apples with the sugar, flour and cinnamon and mix well. Grease a 24cm/9in ovenproof dish and spoon in the apple mixture and spread evenly.
2. To make the crumble mix the flour, sugar and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add the cubed butter and rub into the flour mixture. Keep rubbing until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs and the butter is fully incorporated, then if using oats, stir evenly through the mix.
3. Pour the crumb mix evenly over the apples using a fork to even out. Set on a baking tray and put in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden and the fruit is bubbling. Leave to cool for 10 minutes before serving with cream, custard or ice cream – or all three!
