Residents at Old Charlton House in Cowes marked World Golden Retriever Day with a visit from some very special four-legged visitors.
Three golden retrievers – Kevin, Bertie and Archie – were brought in by their owners, who gave up their time to share their dogs with residents.
Kevin, aged four, Bertie, who stood out with his slightly redder coat, and Archie, a seven-month-old puppy, quickly became the stars of the day.
Despite his young age, residents couldn’t help but comment on how big Archie already is, with the puppy making himself particularly comfortable by hopping up on chairs in the lounge.
All three dogs were described as calm and friendly, happily greeting residents and enjoying plenty of attention and fuss.
Staff at the care home say pet therapy plays an important role in supporting residents’ mental and physical wellbeing, offering emotional comfort, reducing anxiety and helping improve overall happiness.
Residents said the dogs were beautifully behaved and a joy to spend time with. One resident, Brenda, said the visit brought back fond memories.
“It made us all feel very relaxed and reminded us of a time when we had our own pets,” she said.
Activities co-ordinator Debbie Webb thanked the dog owners for their generosity.
She said:
“We are so grateful to the owners for sharing their time and their lovely dogs with us.
"We are a nation of pet lovers, but when someone goes into a care home they are often cut off from animals, so we really appreciate people giving up their precious time to bring pets in to visit.”
The visit proved to be a heartwarming way to celebrate World Golden Retriever Day, leaving residents smiling long after the dogs had gone home.
