Hundreds of schoolchildren are learning about being evacuees, at Havenstreet Steam Railway this week.

Each day, students from 16 schools have been packed on board vintage trains, complete with gas masks.  They’ve been taking lessons too, interrupted by an air raid siren that means the children have had to take shelter. Cooking classes have included eggless cake and rationing.  The initiative aims to teach children what it was like to live through World War Two.  Isle of Wight Council Cabinet member for Children and Young People Cllr Alan Wells said, “Being waved off and travelling on an original steam train in wartime clothing while carrying gas masks will show exactly what many of their grandparents experienced over 60 years ago.”
