New powers are in force in Newport to combat anti-social behaviour. It allows police officers and Police Community Support Officers to disperse groups of two or more people.
In certain circumstances, the police can return young people aged 16 or under, who are unsupervised in public places after 9pm, to where they live. Targeted patrols are also underway and community events with be held. A similar campaign last summer is credited with 677 fewer reports of anti-social behaviour across the whole island.
