POLICE APPEAL AFTER INDECENT ASSAULT REPORTED IN RYDE

Police are appealing for witnesses after a report of an indecent assault in Ryde, Isle of Wight.

A 39-year-old woman from the Isle of Wight was walking alone along North Walk on Ryde Esplanade between approximately ten past midnight and twenty to one this morning (Friday, December 18, 2009).

She was approached by a man she did not know on Appley Beach in the area between the nearby café and Appley Tower.

The woman asked the man to leave her alone after he took hold of her. He refused and she bit him on the face when he tried to kiss her.

The man let the woman go and ran towards a vehicle parked nearby.

The suspect is described as:

● Male

● 5 ft 9 ins tall

● Short dark hair

● Olive looking skin

● Possibly with an injury to his face

● He was wearing an expensive looking zip up jacket

● He spoke with an accent, believed to be of Eastern European origin.

Detective Sergeant Gary Lyons of Isle of Wight CID said: "This is the first reported indecent assault of this nature we've had on the Island this winter. I'm appealing to the public to contact detectives with any information they may have about the identity of this man.
