PLUTO PROJECT MARKED AT ISLE OF WIGHT ZOO

The fort that’s home to the Isle of Wight Zoo will commemorate a crucial project that helped supply fuel for D Day.

The Yaverland building housed pumps and pipes linking England to France, during World War Two. The PipeLine Under The Ocean project was also known as PLUTO and the zoo housed eleven of sixteen pumps in Sandown. There were five more at Browns and the Grand Hotel. Now one of the original pumps has been returned to the fort in time for the anniversary of D Day. Pluto veteran Laura Barlee, who worked at PLUTO command Norfolk House and is the niece of Clement Atlee, will be attending a special ceremony today.
