MORE MAJOR WORK TO IMPROVE ISLAND ROADS

The latest phase of work in a major programme of Isle of Wight Council road improvements is progressing.

From last Thursday (Aug 13), work costing £50,000 began on Cedar Hill in Carisbrooke where the carriageway will be resurfaced and kerbs and road gullies repaired.

In order to reduce the impact on road users, as much of the work as possible will be carried out during the evening and overnight. Necessary diversions will be well signposted and affected properties have all been notified of the work.

Then on August 24, a five-week, £215,000 scheme to resurface Godshill Road (A 3020) between Whiteley Bank and Victoria Avenue will begin. This work, that will also include kerb and gully repair, will in the main be completed overnight in recognition of the busy nature of this stretch of road.

Both schemes are part of £11 million worth of highways works planned by the council, including upgrading some of the Island's roads that are most in need of treatment.

"It is clear that the state of the Island's highways network is a matter of ongoing concern for residents," said Cllr Edward Giles, IW Council cabinet member for environment and transport.

"Of course in the longer term, the Highways PFI will see unprecedented investment in resurfacing every stretch of Island highway but we are not prepared to wait until then. The condition on our highways is such that we need improvements now and up to the time the PFI takes over."
