Actor and motorbike fan Ewan McGregor is the inspiration for an Isle of Wight police officer who’s planning to raise charity cash.
Sergeant Phil Smith is preparing to ride his motorcycle around Britain to raise money for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice and the Motor Neurone Disease Association. His adventure will take place in May. His wife Bessie was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, last year. The muscle wasting disease has already forced her to give up work as a nurse. Phil will ride 1500 miles, through locations connected with the life of former IOW governor Lord Louis Mountbatten (whose memory prompted an appeal to open the Isle of Wight Earl Mountbatten Hospice in 1982).
