LIVELY COUNCIL MEETING APPROVES 2.5% HIKE

The IW Council, on Wednesday night, approved a council tax increase for 2010/11 of 2.5% - above the average highlighted by the local government association.

It scrapped parking permits on the Island to free up cash which it says will be used to support those requiring social care, voting in an amended budget from the one that was proposed to the Cabinet at the start of the month.  Two alternative budgets were out voted during the meeting.  The budget will also see £2.7 million slashed from the Supporting People scheme. The Conservatives say it's about a transition to a different type of care, but carers, parents of people with learning disabilites and care sector workers were among those opposed to the changes. They're worried about the loss of crucial services like respite care and jobs.  Council Leader David Pugh told BBC Radio Solent that final decisions were yet to be made and that the process was ongoing and transparent.
