The Mersey ferry HMS Iris after the 1918 Zeebrugge raid.
A new book will evoke memories of a naval raid on Zeebrugge, during World War One, in which a sailor from the Isle of Wight was killed.
Ordinary Seaman Henry Hollis, from Godshill (born 1897), was among the crew of HMS Iris - one of three assault ships which transported men from the Royal Marines Light Infantry to attack the Mole at Zeebrugge. Formerly an employee at Littlestone Farm, he enlisted to join the Royal Navy during the war. Ordinary Seamen Hollis died in the raid, which was considered to be a suicide mission. His body was brought to Dover and was buried in St. James' Cemetery. The operation was an attempt to stop the Kaiser’s army using Bruges as a submarine base. You can read the full story in 'The Zeebrugge Raid 1918: The Finest Feat of Arms' by Paul Kendall, which is published by Spellmount today, to mark the 90th anniversary of the St George’s Day attack.
