The announcement that Vestas' planned research and development facility near Newport has been offered Government aid has been welcomed by the Isle of Wight Council.
IW Council chief executive Steve Beynon said he was delighted the council's own efforts to support the facility at West Medina Mills werenow being supported by Government investment.
"It must be remembered that the River Medina is an environmentally sensitive area and the council, prior to granting planning permissionfor the centre, worked hard to ensure the scheme overcame these environmental considerations," he said.
IW Council leader Cllr David Pugh, said: "Following intensive work by our highways and planning departments, the council arranged a specialmeeting of its Planning Committee in early April, at which the plans for the R&D facility were approved. Work on the highways route for the newfacility are underway.
"Whilst we are disappointed at Vestas' decision towithdraw their manufacturing plant from the Island, we have alwaysrecognised the need to have an ongoing constructive dialogue with thecompany given their commitment to establish an R&D facility locally.
"We are part of the regional task force set up following the Vestas closure announcement and through this partnership we will continue topress the Island's case for further economic investment from both the public and private sectors.
