FLYING THE (UNION) FLAG FOR PRIDE

The Union Flag.
The Union Flag.

The Island’s MP is urging us to foster a sense of national pride. Andrew Turner has co-sponsored a parliamentary bill in support of the Union Flag, which is commonly known as the Union Jack.

The flag was originally adopted by royal proclamation by King James VI and I, on 12 April 1606. It combined the crosses of St. Andrew (Scotland) and St. George (England), just as he had combined the two thrones when he succeeded Elizabeth I in England. In 1801, the Union with Ireland brought the cross of St. Patrick into the flag. The modern symbol was established by royal proclamation by King George III on 1 January 1801.
