ENCOURAGING PROVISIONAL A-LEVEL RESULTS FOR 2009

The number of students achieving A-level qualifications on the Isle of
Wight has seen a rise when compared to 2008.

Provisional figures released today indicate that the overall pass rate
(A - E grades) has risen by three percentage points, giving the Isle of
Wight an average of 97% (96.6% - see notes to editors) overall pass rate
compared to 94% in 2008.

On a national scale, for the 27th year in a row the number of students
given an A grade rose, up to 26.7%, while the pass rate rose another 0.3
percentage points, to 97.5%.

Isle of Wight Council Leader David Pugh said "Raising educational
standards remains one of our greatest priorities as a council.

Each of the Island's five high schools has overall pass rates well above
90%. Provisional results for each school is below: (Figure is overall
pass rate)

Carisbrooke High: 96% (91% in 2008)

Cowes High: 98% (96% in 2008)

Medina High: 95% (93% in 2008)

Ryde High: 97% (90% in 2008)

Sandown High: 97% (98% in 2008)

Students who have not received the results they require for higher
education  can contact their schools or Youth Connexions for advice on (01983) 525927.
Youth Connexions officers were at schools this morning to provide support and
guidance and will also be present at schools for next week's GCSE
results.
