Island parents and trained experts will be on hand to help new mums answer all questions about breastfeeding and more, at a unique drop-in advice session on 26 June.
Organised by the Isle of Wight branch of the national parenting charity NCT, it will take place during the Department of Health’s National Breastfeeding Week 2010, which runs from 21-27 June.
The session will be an opportunity to help new mums master the art of breastfeeding.
As well as plenty of tea and biscuits, there will be a chance to chat through any problems they might be facing. The NCT wants to show that while breastfeeding may seem daunting and while it can present many challenges, with a little bit of support, most issues can be overcome.
It takes place at Nine Acres primary school in Trafalgar Road, Newport on the 26th June, between 10am-3pm.
To support breastfeeding mums, the NCT also runs local breastfeeding sessions and NCT breastfeeding counsellors are available seven days a week to answer questions and provide support around baby feeding. You can call the NCT Breastfeeding Line on 0300 330 0771 is open Mon-Sun between 8am and 10pm.
You don’t have to be a member of the NCT to come along. And if you’re not breastfeeding, please pop in, say hello and find out a little more about what we do.
The event falls just weeks after the passing of a new law which will protect mums who wish to breastfeed when in public. Under the new Equality Act, passed in April 2010, mums cannot be discriminated against, asked to leave a venue or treated unfavourably because they are breastfeeding when out and about in England and Wales¹. The Act will come into effect in the Autumn.
