Work is underway in East Cowes to widen a section of road and install a
crossing along Beatrice Avenue.
The Isle of Wight Council is responding to the needs of local residents
who requested a safe crossing point and wider footpaths for children
walking to the local school.
The road has experienced increased traffic flow since the new housing
development commenced in the area and the council is leading a scheme to
improve the road and footways.
In order to improve visibility, a section of carriageway between
Crossways and the boundary of East Cowes Vics FC is being widened. A
pedestrian crossing is also being installed outside Osborne Middle
School.
Existing footpaths will also be resurfaced and a new 1.8m wide footway
and road widening will be provided on the eastern side of the road
between Osborne Middle School and the junction of Saunders Way. Plans
are also in place to rearrange to bus stop outside the school to make it
safer for pedestrians.
Peter Hayward, Head of Highways and Transport at the Isle of Wight
Council said: "I'm really pleased that we are able to bring this scheme
forward now which will make it much easier for children to be able to
walk to school safely. This should not only reduce congestion at the
beginning and end of the school day but also encourage people to make
healthy travel choices."
