COUNCIL CONTINUES 'GREEN' JOBS PLEDGE

Isle of Wight Council leaders have welcomed the planning committee decision to approve a new job-creating research and development facility near Newport - and pledged to continue working to attract more new employers.

IW Council leader David Pugh said the approval of the Vestas R&D facility at West Medina Mills demonstrated both the council's intention-and ability - to help stimulate the Island's economy by supporting regeneration initiatives.

"The West Medina Mills site itself is environmentally sensitive so much has been done to preserve that environment but at the same time support the creation of a facility to provide employment for Island people and
also keep us at the forefront of green technology" Cllr Pugh said.

Deputy Leader George Brown, the council's cabinet member for the economy, said he had been encouraged by the level of interest currently being shown in the Island by potential businesses.

"I think the prospects of attracting new green technology is enhanced by the decision to approve the Vestas R&D facility. Not only does this indicate that world-leading companies are interested in the Island and its workforce, it demonstrates also that the council is willing to work with those companies every step of the way.

"The council remains focussed on the areas in which it is able to assist regeneration. We are also looking forward to a meeting with climate change secretary Ed Miliband next month where under discussion will be how the Island can continue to benefit from our status as a natural local for green industries.
