CAN YOU BE A MEMBER OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT YOUTH COUNCIL?

Young people are being invited to become candidates in the forthcoming Isle of Wight Youth Council elections.

The Youth Council is an independent organisation that works with Isle of Wight Council and other organisations, helping the local authority shape schemes and policies that are aimed to benefit young people. It is made up of members from four areas of the Island - North, East, South, West.

In recent years the Youth Council has won national awards and recognition for its achievements including helping establish a Multi Use Games Area in Freshwater and a new 'Youth Fare' offered by Red Funnel.

Meanwhile, candidates are also being sought for the Isle of Wight's Member of the UK Youth Parliament (MYP). Once elected, the MYP works with their local MP, councillors, schools and the youth council on local issues.

Anyone aged 13-21 can sit on the youth council, while if you are aged 11- 18 you can become a candidate for the youth MP.

Anyone interested in becoming a youth councillor and/or wants to register their interest in becoming the Isle of Wight's Member of Youth Parliament should contact Isle of Wight Council Youth Empowerment Worker Chris Smy at chris.smy@iow.gov.uk.

The final deadline for registration is November 6 2009 although it is recommended anyone interested should get in touch as soon as possible.
