CALLS TO COLLECT ABANDONED CARS

As the Big Freeze becomes the Big Thaw, Island motorists forced to abandon their vehicles are being asked to collect them as soon as it’s safe to do so.

Some are obstructing the highway and that can impair gritting and salting runs. The Isle of Wight Council has pledged to take a reasonable and sensible approach, but police have already moved a number of vehicles from dangerous locations.

Isle of Wight Police Operations Inspector Terry Clawson said,  “Police are continuing to work closely with partner agencies to maintain public safety in the adverse weather conditions. If your vehicle is abandoned on a main road and you think it’s going to cause problems for other motorists, please arrange for the vehicle to be moved as soon as it is safe to do so, and let the police know where it is by calling us on 101."
