BIG GREEN PICNIC ON ISLE OF WIGHT

The inaugural Big Green Picnic takes place on the Isle of Wight, later this month.

Newport town centre will host the event, on 24 and 25 May 24.  It is one of the events designed to encourage residents and tourists to become more environmentally aware. Businesses, arts organisations and the Isle of Wight Council will be among those taking part.  The local authority wants to make the Isle of Wight’s the lowest carbon footprint in England, by 2020.

Among the attractions, organisers are promising a local eco-friendly mobile coffee company which sells drinks from the back of a 1940s Italian moped, firms selling solar panels and wind turbines and new eco-friendly buses by Southern Vectis.

Isle of Wight Council Leader David Pugh says, "We staged a successful Eco Island conference last month which set out our vision and encouraged local businesses to play their part in creating a place which residents and visitors alike can be proud of.  But it is also down to individuals to do their bit to protect our beautiful environment for future generations. The Big Green picnic will give visitors, residents and their families a marvellous fun day out, whilst at the same time furthering our Eco Island vision."
