Travis triumphs in Bowls showdown

In an incredible achievement, the IW under 18s open bowls championship has been won eleven year old Travis Meller. Travis, a pupil at Lake Middle School, triumphed against a field of older and more experienced competitors in a gripping contest.

In a growing sport which is attracting more and more young Islanders, Travis held off the challenge of Ben Mackett in the final, eventually overcoming his rival by two sets to nil to claim the Kompan Cup. An IW CBA spokesman said it was a credit to both players how well they performed throughout the day.

Although a major coup by such a young player, the victory may not come as a surprise to insiders, with Travis already having reached the semi-finals of the IW under 25s competition. In the light of such recent success, it comes as little surprise that Travis, of Atherley Road, Shanklin, has already set his sights on competing in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
