Flora London Marathon’s runners will be out there today, pounding the capital’s streets in pursuit of personal pride, personal bests and as much publicity as they can muster in 26.2 miles – all in the aid of a good cause or three.

Born in Lancashire Shanklin Resident Joan Roberts has lived on the Island since December 1963. Mother of two grown up sons and two grandchildren, ages 5 and 3. Joan worked in the office of Archbishop King School for 17 years before retiring in 2002. Still involved with schools Joan is Clerk to Governors of Archbishop King Middle School and Shanklin CE Primary School.

At 70 years old keen athlete Joan has always been keen on sports but only started running 6 years ago.

Last year she entered the London Marathon, finishing in 6 hours 21 minutes, Joan adds A respectable time for someone of my age, I have entered again this year as I gained a place in the ‘Good for your Age’ category”.

Joan trains 5 days a week following a Training Programme from Runners World magazine.

Her running partner Robert was not as fortunate in gaining a place in the public ballot and has obtained a Gold Bond place with the Charity ‘Help the Hospices’. For this he has to raise £1500 so she is helping him in his fund raising.

Details of the charity 'Help the Hospices', can be found on a web site set up to aid with fundraising www.justgiving.com/JoanandRobert or tel 864299
