You may have seen on the front page of the county press an article about a couple in their 80’s who met at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice whilst both recovering from cancer. Their friendship blossomed and they decided to get married. One thing the bride loved was church bells and she would have liked to have had them playing at the wedding. Unfortunately, the church they were getting married in East Cowes did not have church bells. However, the lady organising the wedding had heard of the Sandown High School Hand bell Team and approached Mrs Glanville, the music teacher at Sandown High School, to see if they could play for the wedding. She put it to the students and they willingly agreed. The students normally practice once a week after school but such was their commitment that they included some extra practices and organised their Easter Holidays around the wedding so that they could fulfil this special request for a special couple.

The hand bell team played while the guests arrived at the wedding service and also after as they were leaving. The comments afterwards showed how much their contribution was appreciated. It is so fantastic that these young people could put themselves out for a special couple very much more senior in years. It was a very moving occasion to be part of.
