STORM WARNING TO DRIVERS

TORRENTIAL summer downpours have prompted a reminder from police to drivers to take care in heavy rain.
Sgt Mike Streeter, of the roads poilicing unit, warned drivers to increase their braking distance and use dipped headlights.
"It can take far longer to stop on a wet surface than on a dry one, so people must take extra care and increase their braking distance," he said.
"Roads will be extra slippery following the long dry spell."
He advised driving with care in heavy rain and manoeuvering gently, avoiding sudden braking or acceleration. To avoid locking the wheels, get into a low gear earlier than usual, allow the speed to fall and use the brake pedal gently.
He also advised pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists to take extra safety measures, ensuring they wear conspicuous high-visibility clothing.
