A new ‘one stop shop’ website for young people has recently been launched. GreenGoldFish.com is the product of a vision by Eileen Monks, the Isle of Wight Youth Trust Director, and gives children and young people on the Island the chance to access information relevant to them via the World Wide Web.
This new resource has been achieved through a knowledge transfer partnership between the Youth Trust and University of Portsmouth, with further funding coming from the Department of Trade and Industry.
Project leader Colin Simmonds was quick to point out the local feel of the website: “whilst there are a lot of websites for young people nationally, GreenGoldFish.com is specific to children and young people on the Island. It has a local feel with events on the Island for young people or local travel or job information. The essence of the site is that children and young people just have to remember one web address – GreenGoldFish.com – and this will link them to a range of information that they need.”
The website also allows young people to build their own WebPages and subject to permission and screening from the Youth Trust, display them live on the site. Project workers hope this will make young people feel part of the website, and help make it a safe service for them to use.
There are two versions of the site – one for younger children and one for older children – highlighting the extent to which GreenGoldFish is striving to cater for specific age groups. The older children version of the website can be found at http://www.greengoldfish.com/homepageTeen.php
