Two Island musicians have recently been recognised for their dedication and excellence
29 year old Elizabeth Traill, of Wootton, has picked up a Royal Philharmonic Society young artist award. She received the Susan Chilcott Scholarship – presented to her by television celebrity Jonathan Dimbleby – which recognises her unique talent in the industry.
This is not the first time Elizabeth has received such acclaim; last year she won the Hampshire singer of the year competition, and came second in the Intercollegiate Clonter Opera competition.
The former Bembridge School choir member is now hoping to work with specialist opera coaches in Germany ahead of her future performances, which include the role of Adele in ‘Die Fledermaus’ next spring.
Elsewhere, former Sandown High School pupil Sarah Thornton has become a member of the National Youth Training Choir of Great Britain.
The sixteen year old, who is now studying at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, has been offered a place in the Soprano 1 section of the choir.
Sarah claimed her place in the choir - regarded by many as a stepping stone to the full National Youth Choir -by impressing a panel of judges at her audition, where she performed ‘Under the Greenwood Tree’ by Thomas Arne.
When she finishes her A levels Sarah hopes to continue her musical career, and either teach or become a classical singer.
