East Cowes has a new mini-moto club and it's looking for members. Hampshire and IW Police's ACTING INSPECTOR GED ARMITAGE has this report on why it was set up and how you can get involved:

Mini Moto bikes have been the burden of many communities since they came on to the market in 2003. Their inappropriate use is a growing problem, through anti-social driving and unregulated use.

PCSO Derek Howard was approached by Chris Parker, a member of the East Cowes Pavilion CIC Youth Club. They recognised the need for a Mini Moto facility to achieve the following.

1. Work in partnership with the community.
2. Educate young people on road safety issues.
3. Reduce the nuisance and uninsured use of these types of bikes

PCSO Howard then contacted RESPECT, which is a national governing body, working with central government, local agencies and local people to build communities. The organisation was very supportive and sent detailed information on how to set up a club, together with details of a variety of marshalling and safety courses.

Chris, Ivan Peckham (youth worker from The Pavilion Project) and Derek then had to find a location and Osborne Middle School became involved in the project. Two successful demonstration days were held there and Headteacher Mr Edny allowed the use of the school grounds.

The club requires support and investment and to date donations have been received from Hampshire Constabulary, East Cowes Town Council and Island businesses.

Acting Inspector Ged Armitage, who leads the East Cowes Safer Neighbourhoods Team said, “This is a great example of the influence and benefit to communities that PCSOs bring. It also demonstrates how communities can work together to shape their own future.”

If you would like to join the club, offer support or are interested in setting up similar projects, contact the East Cowes Safer Neighbourhoods Team by emailing eastcowes.snt@hampshire.pnn.police.uk, or telephone 0845 045 45 45.
