Island built radar up and running

This Tuesday saw the launch of an Island-built radar aboard a brand new warship.

The SAMPSON radar, which has an anti-jamming capability and the ability to track multiple targets, was built in Cowes by BAE systems and is the principle sensor on the Dauntless, the second of the Royal Navy’s fleet of Type 45 anti-air warfare destroyers.

Over 13,000 people joined BAE employees to watch the launch of the ship on the Clyde in Scotland, where BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions managing director Vic Emery heralded the innovation, design and engineering skills of company employees.

BAE is the premier transatlantic defence and aerospace company, and also specialises in advanced electronics and information technology solutions. With sites in 30 English counties and almost 90,000 employees worldwide, the company generates £14.8 billion in annual sales. Such vast figures make it all the more impressive that the Island’s “Insyte” branch of BAE, located on Newport Road, has had such a significant part to play in the company’s success.
