Hurricanes 25 Warlingham 23

The Hurricanes recently played host to Warlingham and were looking for revenge following an earlier defeaft by the fourth-placed visitors.

In beautiful conditions most of the early contest was in the centre of the pitch, with the visitors opting to play down the slope.

The visitors soon took the lead with a penalty, but were shortly pegged back when Wightlink man of the match Neil Buckingham Wightlink man-of-the-match, replied with a penalty, levelling the scores.

After a spell of positive attacking play from the Hurries, during which they were encamped in the visitor's half. However, in spite of the Hurricanes' determined approach play, infringements continued to forced them back.

Up front, the front row of Lodge, G.Thomas & Harris, already gaining a reputation in this league, were completely overpowering the visitors front row, supported by a superb effort by Crew and young Joe Rees.

Despite the Islanders dominating much of the play, Warlingham took the lead ince more with a penalty, but this advantage would be short lived as captain Ross Edmunds smashed his way through the defence on the before laying off a low pass to Sam Rees who went in to score an unopposed try. The try was converted by Buckingham, leaving the score at 10-6 at the interval.

Within 2 minutes of the second half, the visitors took the lead for a third time, with two tries - one of which was converted - giving them an 18-10 advantage.

Both teams were looking for points with strong attacking play, but it was the visitors who again found the tryline, with the number 8 driving over to make the score 23-10.

At this stage, The Hurricanes looked virtually out of the game, but Buckingham weighed in with a series of penalties, reducing the deficit to 23-19.

As Warlington's disciplinary problems got the better of them, Buckingham was on hand once more to pull the Islanders back to within one point of their rivals. Then, with barely a minutes to go, the Hurries won a scrummage, and the ball flew out to Buckingham who - in true 'Johnny Wilkinson' style - kicked a huge drop goal which set the home crowd into a frenzy.

Despite late pressure, the Hurricanes held on for a memorable 25-23 victory.

The Hurries have a fortnights rest before travelling away to Old Caterhamians on 17th February.
