FUTURE OF UNDERCLIFF DRIVE SCHEME NOW LOOKS UNCERTAIN
A newly improved road could run through Whitwell, linking southern areas of the Isle of Wight. It is one of a number of options being presented to members of the IW Council’s Cabinet, when they meet on 20 November. Compulsory purchase orders could also be abandoned, alongside a proposal to abandon the controversial scheme to repair and upgrade Undercliff Drive. The future of the road affected by landslides now looks uncertain, following controversy surrounding the way the contract to upgrade the route was awarded to the firm High Point Rendel and the departure of a number of high profile council officers. £2.9million in Government funds has already been spent on the scheme and one CPO has been agreed with a local landowner.
