The second annual Crazy Duck Appeal has been launched, with all Islanders encouraged to come up with imaginative new schemes to raise funds for charity.

The event is set to raise money for Needy Island Children, and is being co-ordinated by Isle of Wight Round Table and Ryde Round Table. The appeal consists of a variety of fundraising events, including packing bags at supermarkets, sponsored walks and a dinner dance, and such activities – combined with kind donations – have already seen £10,000 raised.

Last year’s event was inspired by three men who would not give in to their illness; Roger Griffiths, Kit Hobday and Tony Newman. The £23,000 raised last year was divided between the Island Branch of The Motor Neurons Association, the Earl Mountbatten Hospice and the Kit Hobday Chemotherapy Suite at St. Mary's Hospital. Sadly, Roger Griffiths – who suffered with Motor Neurone Disease – lost his life recently, but the event is set to continue, with the emphasis on raising money for a worthy Island charity and having plenty of fun in the process.

The Grand Finale of the fundraising is the popular Duck Race itself, which takes place on the 17th December along the river adjacent to Shide Trees. It is sure to be an exciting event, and a fitting conclusion to a series of tremendous activities in support of Island causes.
