Bembridge man scales mountain for cancer charity

An Island man has trekked to the mind-boggling height of 19,300ft to raise a mountain of cash.

GKN Aerospace worker Peter Swallow, of Bembridge, took part in the adventure to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, and in doing so raised £8,000 for Macmillan Cancer Research.

38 year old Peter, whose late father had received care from the Macmillan group, saw the trek to Africa’s highest peak as the ideal way to raise money for this deserving cause, and in doing so challenged himself to his limits. Setting out in a party of 26, Peter was one of only twelve who reached the peak of Kilimanjaro, and described the arduous ordeal of trekking in the pitch black and freezing cold as “probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done”.

Peter’s extraordinary efforts mean the Macmillan appeal on the Island to raise £140,000 for cancer nurse specialists at St Mary’s Hospital has received a massive boost, and will also stand as great inspirational for fellow Islanders contemplating such adventures.
