On the last Friday in May we discovered a fantastic night out that’s not to be missed by anyone who loves live music. Alienation has been running since November last year and is now established as one of the best nights out that I’ve come across.
The Venue is arguably the finest location on the Island with more than just bands playing to an excited audience. Cult films projected onto a screen behind the bands who are supported by resident and guest DJ’s between sets. Two unsigned Island bands played, three-piece Plushy Edwards to a backdrop of the 3 Amigos and four-piece Jacuna to Enter the Dragon. Both bands played and sung their hearts out, with Jacuna’s charismatic lead singer sounding like a cross between the lead singer from Reef, Pearl Jam and John Butler, expending so much energy he seemed exhausted after a 30 minute set!
My Device from Brighton headlined, bringing the live section of the night crashing to a close. DJ’s played tracks from the Birthday Party, Malcolm Maclarren, Velvet Underground and Franz Ferdinand amongst others, a soundtrack that won’t be heard anywhere else.
Original live Indie, Rock, Punk, Brit Pop music in a venue of this size only happens every other month, so put this in your diary for 28th July. This brilliant night is run as a community event to promote Island live music from up and coming bands. Doors open from 9pm and the night ends at 1am. Entry is free before 10pm but only £5 after this, a snip to support and witness the future of British music at first hand. Don’t forget, night buses run to Newport, Cowes, Sandown, Lake and Shanklin so there’s no problem getting home in the wee small hours!
