Update from Cowes Town Council
I will be standing down as Mayor as of 10 May 2012 at the end of my year’s term, when a new Mayor will be elected by the Town Council. It has been a real privilege and honour to serve the town in this role over the past year. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting many diverse local organisations and people who give freely of their time to make Cowes the unique place that it is.
QUALITY PARISH STATUS RE-ACCREDATION
The Town Council submitted a portfolio and the Town Clerk and Mayor attended an interview panel in January 2012 to gain Quality Status re-accreditation. We are delighted to have received re-accreditation and were presented with our certificate at the April 2012 Town Council meeting by the Chair of the Quality Status Committee, Mr David Langford.
CYCLING IN THE TOWN CENTRE
It has been brought to our attention again that cyclists continue to cycle along the pedestrianised area of the High Street. Please consider that those who are older, younger or less mobile may not see or hear a cyclist approaching at speed.
TOWN COUNCIL PROJECTS
The Town Council is currently working on a number of projects which we hope to deliver over the coming months. These include: refurbishment of street furniture (repainting the Cowes sign at Egypt Point, benches along the Princes Green and the semi-circular wall and seating on the Parade); replacement of the skate park fencing and, provision of a bin outside the new Multi-Use Games area at Northwood Recreation Ground.
70th ANNIVERSARY ORP BLYSKAWICA COMMEMORATION
A programme of exciting events in both West and East Cowes, organized by the Friends of ORP Blyskawica Society, will take place over the weekend of 4 – 7 May 2012 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the defence of Cowes both sides of the river by the Polish destroyer ORP Blyskawica. These range from exhibitions, dedications and wreath- layings to evening concerts. For full details of the programme please visit www.blyskawica–cowes.org.uk.
FINALLY
Please do not hesitate in getting in touch with us, if there is anything you wish to raise with your Town Council. The opening hours of the Town Council office are normally Monday – Thursday between 9.30am – 12 mid-day. Our next full Town Council meeting will be held on Thursday 10 May 2012, 7pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, which you are most welcome to attend.
Cllr Rebecca McGregor, Mayor of Cowes
