Visit Ryde!

The Town Council is pleased to report that 60,000 2012 Ryde Town Maps have been printed and distributed to Island attractions, visitor information centres, mainland ferry terminals, Hovertravel in Southsea, and throughout the town. Our ‘Visit Ryde’ 2012 poster promoting events in the town is on display across the Wightlink ferry terminals and fleet, in visitor information centres, notice boards and local businesses. A refreshed 4 and 2 minute Ryde ‘feature’ is also currently being shown across Wightlink ferry fleet and terminals. If you would like any Ryde Maps or a poster to display please contact the Council using the details above.

Summer Planting and Decorative Lighting

The Town Council’s planting scheme has been extended this year, with barrier baskets planted and placed along the railings in front of Ryde bus station. A tiered planter commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with planting in a red, white and blue theme has been placed in St Thomas’s Square. An additional tiered planter celebrating the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games with Olympic ‘ring’ colour planting on each tier has been placed in John Street. The town’s decorative lighting is also in place with the lights in Union Street displaying a special Jubilee theme of red, white and blue.

Grants Awarded

The Town Council has recently awarded over £6,000 in grants to local voluntary and community organisations ranging from a project run by Barnardos for a summer holiday play scheme to assisting with the purchase of prizes for the Vectis Boating and Fishing competition for young people later in the year. The Town Council wishes all the organsiations it has assisted all the very best of luck with their projects. It is anticipated that the next round of grant funding applications will be considered in the autumn.

Ryde Skatepark Update

Having taken over the skatepark on Ryde Esplanade in 2010 in order to prevent it being demolished, the Town Council has now decided to seek external funding in the region of £70 – £100,000 to enable the park to start to be refurbished. In the meantime the bowl at the park will need to be removed due to dry rot being found – this is a short-term measure awaiting the larger refurbishment and the quarter pipe ride attached to the bowl will remain. The Council will also continue to undertake weekly maintenance and repairs. If you are a park user or parent and would like to get involved with helping to raise funds for, and influence, the bigger refurbishment project please do contact the Council using the details above. If you are a local business and would like to sponsor the park we would also love to hear from you!

Isle of Wight Foodbank

The Ryde outpost of the Isle of Wight Foodbank, located at the Grace Church in Marlborough Road, recently benefitted from receiving a cheque for £250 from his 2011/12 ward allocation from outgoing Ryde Mayor, Councillor David Knowles. The Foodbank provides emergency food and support to local people in crisis and if you would like to get in touch with them please go to www.isleofwight.foodbank.org.uk or telephone 292040.
