The Isle of Wight Garlic Festival is Back!

Newchurch once again became the buzzing centre for the Isle of Wight Garlic Festival, back by popular demand. Last year when organisers Newchurch Parish Sports and Community Association decided not to continue running of the festival, after 21 years it was thought another popular Island event would be lost. However with thanks to Colin Boswell IW Garlic Farm owner, businessman David Holmes and a range of other island businesses the festival continued bigger and better than ever.

Annual St Helens Fort Walk

Thousands decended on Silver Sands Beach at St Helens Duver for the starting point of the annual Fort Walk. The fort is unreachable except for extremely low tides perhaps only present once or twice a year, this enables people to wade out and walk around the fort wall. The event which passed without incident this year has no organisers but is spread by word of mouth only, the event was originally started by the friends of Bembridge group.

Vintage Vehicles at Calborne Mill

The event has become an annual fixture for motor enthusiasts, with numbers up on previous years people arrived to look at the vintage vehicles on display and the traditional milling of flour at the mill. Amoung the clubs taking part this year were the Vectis Vintage Tractor and Standign Engine Club, the IW Classic Ford Club, the IW Austin Car Club, the IW Traction Engine Club and the IW Millitary Vehicles Club.

This year saw the 180th Cowes Week with the past twelve of these having main sponsorship from Skandia. Things have changed greatly from that first regatta when just 7 boats were sailing . A record 1040 boats were entered this year but things are changing. Throughout the week there were meetings to discuss the future of the event and anyone can pen their opinion on the various options for the regatta on the Skandia Cowes Week web site. Its your chance to plan the future of one of the Island’s main events so get involved.
